Transient Permian-Triassic euxinia in the southern Panthalassa deep ocean

چکیده

Both the duration and severity of deep-water anoxic conditions across Permian-Triassic mass extinction (PTME) are controversial. Panthalassa Ocean circulation models yield varying results, ranging from a well-ventilated deep ocean to rapidly developing northern-latitude, but not southern-latitude, anoxia in response Siberian Traps–driven global warming. To address this uncertainty, we examined southern-paleolatitude pelagic record. Trace metal pyrite framboid data suggest bottom-water euxinic developed southern at PTME, coincident with enhanced volcanic activity indicated by Hg geochemistry. While event PTME placed extraordinary stress on marine life, surface waters appear have recovered more quickly as radiolarian populations returned several million years before they did northern Panthalassa.

Photic zone euxinia during the Permian-triassic superanoxic event.

Carbon and sulfur isotopic data, together with biomarker and iron speciation analyses of the Hovea-3 core that was drilled in the Perth Basin, Western Australia, indicate that euxinic conditions prevailed in the paleowater column during the Permian-Triassic superanoxic event. Biomarkers diagnostic for anoxygenic photosynthesis by Chlorobiaceae are particularly abundant at the boundary and into ...

The Permian–Triassic boundary in Antarctica

The Permian ended with the largest of known mass extinctions in the history of life. This signal event has been difficult to recognize in Antarctic non-marine rocks, because the boundary with the Triassic is defined by marine fossils at a stratotype section in China. Late Permian leaves (Glossopteris) and roots Vertebraria), and Early Triassic leaves (Dicroidium) and vertebrates (Lystrosaurus) ...

The Permian–Triassic boundary crisis and Early Triassic biotic recovery

This issue of Palaeogeography Palaeoclimatology Palaeoecology is devoted to papers on the Permian– Triassic boundary crisis and Early Triassic biotic recovery. It is an outgrowth of the Symposium on Early Triassic Chronostratigraphy and Biotic Recovery that was held in Chaohu, China, on May 21st–23rd, 2005 under the auspices of IGCP Project 467 and attended by about 200 Earth scientists with a ...

Could the Late Permian deep ocean have been anoxic

Models ofocean circulation and biogeochemical cy les are used to speculate bout possible m chanisms of deep-sea anoxia across the Pertoo-Triassic boundary. Two modes of likely Late Permian ocean thermohaline circulation are identified: a vigorous "therm',d mode" driven by cooling in southern polar latitudes and aweaker "haline mode" driven by evaporation fromthe subtropics. We find that the the...

Effects of soil erosion and anoxic–euxinic ocean in the Permian–Triassic marine crisis

The largest mass extinction of biota in the Earth's history occurred during the Permian-Triassic transition and included two extinctions, one each at the latest Permian (first phase) and earliest Triassic (second phase). High seawater temperature in the surface water accompanied by euxinic deep-intermediate water, intrusion of the euxinic water to the surface water, a decrease in pH, and hyperc...
